It is well known that the
wives of Yorkshire farmers have great difficulty
in persuading their husbands to leave home and go
away on holiday. An investigation as to what lies
behind this reveals more than the inevitable
reluctance to spend money. He has doubts about
the proposed destination -
Will the countryside be
any better than we have here at home? Will the
food be as good - a right and proper breakfast
with enough to last all day? Will his feet reach
over the bottom of the bed, which might be hard
or lumpy or have a great sag in the middle? Will
there be real peace and quiet - no roads or
traffic or neighbours or streetlights or crowing
cockerels? Will there be those special things
that really impress his wife like fresh flowers
in the room, homemade chocolates, and a powerful shower that washes the
shampoo from her beautiful long hair in less than
five minutes?
Oldstead Grange is modelled on a Yorkshire farmer's idea of paradise and
it is plain to see that he has a great deal in common
with the most discerning of travellers.
